The RunRuth stared out the window into the dreary december rain. It was too cold to go for a run, too wet. It was the time of year where it wasn't cold enough for snow but cold enough for the pond to have a thin layer of ice. It didn't matter that it was too cold. She couldn't go out anyway. If her mother came home and she was gone, life would get even worse than it already was. Ruth glanced over her shoulder , her little sister, Georgiana, was absorbed in her book and Nate, her baby brother was fast asleep in his playpen. Ruth began to wonder. Their feet a blur on the soft white sand The waves recede and the birds rush forward They peck the wet sand with long hooked beaks As the wave regroups and comes again Wings extend and the piper flies Majestic grace like heron mixed with gull Tiny and courageous
